Abstract

549,803. Packing. RADO, L. June 7, 1941, No. 7229. [Class 94 (i)] Relates to the method of sealing by heat and pressure the overlapping edges of a wrapper having a thermoplastic coating. According to the invention, the sealing is carried out in the usual way by subjecting the overlapping edges to the pressure of a heated tool, but pressure on the edges is maintained without interruption while the heating surface is replaced by a cooling surface, to prevent the sealed edges from separating. Apparatus for carrying out the method may comprise a table 1 embodying a heated plate 3 and a cooled plate 4 arranged close to one another. A wrapped packet 8 is placed with the overlapping edges 9 of the wrapper on the surface of the table, and is then pressed against the table and moved over the plates 3, 4. The overlapping edges are caused to adhere as they pass over the heated plate 3, and the joint so formed is hardened in passing over the plate 4. The apparatus can be embodied in a packaging machine, and part of the apparatus can be vertical so that two or more parts of the package can be sealed at one time.
