[Class 39 (i)] A yellow-fluorescent material comprises magnesium or aluminium oxide activated by vanadium. Potassium may be added to alter the colour to white. The magnesium or aluminium oxide may be obtained from compounds, such as nitrate or hydroxide, which reduce to these oxides below 1000‹ C. Percentages used are 0.1 to 10, preferably 0.5 to 5, of vanadium and 1 to 10, preferably 5, of potassium: Vanadium is added as chloride or oxide, potassium as carbonate. Fluorides of aluminium, magnesium or calcium are used as fluxes. Firing is carried out at 1000-1100‹ C. for one hour. The material may be applied to the interior of a discharge lamp with a binder such as potassium silicate or cellulose acetate.
