Abstract

549,261. Spring and weight applied brakes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and PETCH, T. H. Oct. 10, 1941. No. 13067. [Class 103 (i)] Braking mechanism, wherein the braking effect is produced by the combined action of a spring and a weight, is so arranged that when the spring is exerting its greatest effect the weight is exerting its least effect. The brake lever 1 is moved to apply the brakes by a spring 9, which is pre-compressed and the weight 17 is carried on a nearly vertical arm of a bellcrank lever having the other arm connected by a pic-and-slot mechanism to a lever 11 pivoted on the brake-lever 1. Normally a brake-engine 4 holds off the spring 9, or a thruster or solenoid may be used. When the brake is applied the spring 9 has expanded and the weight-carrying arm is nearly horizontal.
