Abstract

548,978. Glass manufacture. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and STANWORTH, J. E. July 7, 1941, No. 8540. [Class 56] [Also in Group XL] To prevent poisoning of the luminescent material applied to the envelope of an electron discharge lamp where the envelope is of a soda-containing glass, this is treated by a fluid capable of removing the soda and leaving a film of a substantially pure silica. The fluid may be sulphur dioxide and air applied during annealing. With a glass containing a high percentage of lead or barium, dilute nitric acid may be used ; an example of such a composition is silica 40, barium oxide 40, boric oxide 5, alumina 5, soda 10. In either method the glass is washed after treatment with the fluid. Specifications 453,507, [Group XX], and 523,849, [Group XL], are referred to.
