Abstract

548,630. Coating with metals; spray-producers. BLOUNT, B. D. H., and BALLARD, W. E. March 11, 1941, Nos. 3276 and 14090. [Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXIX] In the coating with metals by spraying, the metal is passed from the spraying device through an external tubular shield, a liquid or gaseous reagent such as an inert or reducing gas being admitted to the interior of the shield for the purpose of controlling the properties of the metal coatings. When spraying such metals as copper or copper alloys, paraffin oil is introduced into the interior of the shield which is cooled by a jacket containing liquid, e.g. water, acetone, liquid air or ethylene glycol, which is circulated therethrough and when spraying other metals, such as steel the shield is heat insulated and superheated steam is injected into the shield. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the part 12 of the conical shield 11 is secured to the nozzle 10 of the spraying device the joint being made by heat-insulating material 13. An inlet pipe 14 for the introduction of an inert, reducing or combustible gas is provided. In another form, Fig. 3, the shield 19 secured to the nozzle 10 is provided with an inlet pipe 14 and a jacket 20 containing heat-insulating material, the smaller end of the shield being provided with cooling fins 21. The nozzle 10 of the spraying device may be provided also with the cooling means.
