Abstract
<PICT:0768224/III/1> In apparatus for the reaction of solid substances with gases with production of heat, having surrounding the reaction chamber a protective wall associated with cooling tubes which may form part of a boiler heating surface, the reaction chamber 1 is defined by an annular chamber 9 of heat resisting metal e.g. an iron-nickel-chromium alloy, enclosing cooling tubes 10, the space between the tubes and the chamber walls being filled with a material of good conductivity, e.g. a low melting point metal or alloy, or a high boiling point liquid. Where necessary, a compensating vessel 19 with flow and return pipes 18 and 20 and a safety valve 22 may be fitted, and the vessel 19 may be formed with an open pipe to keep the system under atmospheric pressure. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the cooling tubes are replaced by a cooling jacket arranged externally of and concentric with the heat conducting jacket, and, in a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), a coil of halfround cooling tubes is welded externally of the heat conducting jacket. A final modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), has vertical boiler tubes welded to the heat conducting jacket and interconnecting two headers encircling said jacket.
