Abstract
548,561. Centrifugal separators. WITHERS. J. S. (Battelle Memorial Institute). April 10, 1941, No. 4777. [Class 23] Liquids are separated from solids, such as coal or like, by treatment in a perforated centrifuge basket 1 arranged and operated so that a bed of the material is established on the basket wall, and the remainder of the material flows over the established bed and is discharged at the top of the 'cage under the influence and control of air, dry steam, or like jets from the nozzles 21. The material is fed to the basket through a stationary central tube 12 with an adjustable sleeve 13 having a conical foot 14 from which any material will slip. A sleeve 15 on the feed tube 12 supports a plate 17 with a disc 17a of soft rubber, by means of a conical member 18. The sleeve 15 is also connected by pivoted levers 23 to the controlling valves 22 of the air supply to the nozzles 21. As the material is fed in and the basket rotated, the ring 20 at the top of the basket retains part of the material on the wall, and the streams of air from the nozzles 21 help to carry the dry solids into the casing 9. The separated liquid passes through the basket into the casing 26, and then moves upwards over the edge into the effluent receiver 6. As the basket becomes loaded, the edge of the rubber disc 17a rises to give more space in the basket, but resumes its normal position when the load slacks off.
