Abstract

548,555. Hollow beams and co'umns. BRUNTON, B., and BOOTH, R. G. April 30, 1941, No. 5595. [Classes 20 (i) and 20 (iv)] Hollow beams and columns comprise four longitudinal members 1 of rectangular or triangular cross-section, transverse struts 4 cut away at the corners to fit against the members 1, and a covering 9 consisting of at least two layers of plywood or like sheet material. Each strut 4 may be a one-piece member, but preferably is of box 'formation, Fig. 4, with parallel sides joined by ends 5 which are cut away at 6 to accommodate triangular sectioned members 1. The struts are faced with plywood 7. The plywood coverings 9 of the beam have joints 10, 11 which are at alternate strut positions and are staggered at the sides of the beam relatively to the joints at the top and bottom. The beam is given the required fall by variation in the size of the strut units, and side fillets 12 are attached for supporting roof units. Beams and columns are united by dowel and sockets 15, 16, the former being integral with blocks 14 in the tops of the columns.
