Abstract
548,435. Carbonizing apparatus furnaces for destructive distillation. BRASSERT & CO., Ltd., H. A., and BRUTON, A. L. July 8, 1941, No. 8623. [Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i)] The wall of a heating chamber, for example of a floor or flue in a coking oven of the Knowles type as described in Specifications 434,948 and 492,836, is formed of bricks of which those edges perpendicular to the direction of maximum compression are chamfered, rounded or otherwise shaped so that the area of contact between adjacent bricks is reduced, and lies substantially normally to the direction of internal compressions due to heating. A floor, when cold, is of downwardly concave transverse section, and it is supported from below by piers. The ends' of each brick 17 are chamfered and are supported by piers 18 and by monolithic bricks with capping bricks 16a, and having ducts through which heating gases are introduced into flues 14. By the provision of two floors 12, 13, liquid such as pitch is prevented from seeping through the floors into the regenerating chamber 10. Due to the chamfering of the bricks, the forces of compression due to heating. pass substantially through their centres.
