547,434. Silencers for gaseous currents. HEATHER, F. Feb. 26, 1941, No. 2622. [Class 7 (ii)] A silencer comprises a foraminated tube 1 through which the gases pass, and upon which is wound an absorbent cord 2 with its turns spaced apart at from two to six times the diameter of the cord. A further perforated cylinder 3 may surround the cord 2 and have wound thereon further cord 4 in opposite sense to the first, a casing 5 enclosing the whole. The end cap at the outlet end of the casing, or the outer casing, or both, may be perforated. In another form, lengths of brush elements are wound to and fro longitudinally so as to form a further absorbent layer inside the coils 2, 4 ; or the perforated cylinders may have the absorbent material wound longitudinally, each coil passing along the outside and back through the inside. The core carrying the winding may be formed with radial projections, or provided with grooves, points, wiring, or stitching to retain the coils in position. Instead of cord, a tubular braided covering filled with suitable material may be used. The absorbent material may be asbestos, felt, cotton, glass wool, metal wool &c.
