Abstract

542,179. Silencing gases. HEATHER, F. June 28, 1940, No. 11022. [Class 7 (ii)] Exhaust, intake, or other gases are silenced by passing them through a substantially unobstructed foraminous tube 1 surrounded with brush elements 4 held in a restrained condition, for example, by a surrounding casing 2. The brush stems 3 are preferably parallel to the tube 1, but may be annular, arcuate, or helical. Expansion spaces may be left at intervals between brush elements. The tube or casing, or the brush elements, may taper to vary the density of the fibres or bristles. Radial pins may be provided projecting into the annular space around the tube, so as to locate the brushes. The tube may be of star cross-section, the brushes being arranged in the re-entrant angles. The tube 1 may be merely perforated, or may be made up of bars, wires, or the like forming a mesh, or wound into a spiral. The brushes may be composed of asbestos, metal, hair, wool, or bristle.
