Abstract

298,717. Harrison, J. W. July 30, 1927. Exhaust silencers.-The exhaust gases enter through a pipe 1, the perforated end of which abuts against an expansion chamber 2 which first increases in diameter, then contracts and terminates in a cylindrical portion which discharges into a spherical chamber 4 having a perforated fish-tail outlet 5. The chamber 2 and perforated end of pipe 1 are enclosed in a chamber 3 constructed in two parts held together by bolts and easily dismantled to facilitate the removal and cleaning of a filling of tangled wire. The chamber 4 is also packed with tangled wire. Some of the exhaust flows directly into the expansion chamber 2, the remainder flowing through the perforations into the chamber 3 and then through other perforations at the contracted part of the expansion chamber 2.
