Abstract

547,288. Agglutinated fibrous materials; paper. RAYNER, G. F. (Sylvania Industrial Corporation). Sept. 26, 1940, No. 14580. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts; April 24, 1941] [Classes 42 (ii),.96 and 140) A paper or textile felt is made by admixing non-feltable fibres with 3-20 per cent. by weight of non-tacky synthetic resin fibres which become tacky below the temperature at which the non- feltable fibres are damaged, disposing the mixture as a layer, heating to render the resin fibres tacky and thereafter cooling, thus causing them to adhere to the non-feltable fibres. The non-feltable fibres may be wood pulp, cotton, flax, jute, kapok, silk, cellulose hydrate, cellulose esters, ethers or ether-esters, cellulose ether-xanthates or cellulose xantho-fatty acids, cellulose thiourethanes, natural or synthetic rubber, alginic acid, gelatine, casein, glass, asbestos, mineral wool, natural or synthetic resins or waste regenerated cellulose. The potentially adhesive synthetic resin fibres may be coumarone or indene resins, polystyrene, acid type phenol-aldehyde resins, glycol-polybasic acid resins, drying oil-modified alkyd resins, sulphur olefines resins, dicarboxylic aciddiamine (nylon) resins, poly-butadiene, olefine polysulphides, poly-isobutylene, polydiloroprene, polyvinyl halides and co-polymers of vinyl acetate and vinyl halide, of acrylic acid derivatives and vinyl halide and of styrene and vinyl acetate, mixtures of polyvinyl resins with polyacrylic acid or polymethacrylic acid resins and of polyolefine resins with phenol-aldehyde resins. The fibres may be mixed by carding or by heating the fibres together as in paper making. Plasticizers may be added to the fibres, preferably by incorporation in the resin prior to forming the fibres, and may be removed after heating by extraction with a solvent. The fibre mixture may be shaped before or after heating. Heating may be effected by hot air or water, steam, or hot calendering. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, describes also the use of urea-, amine- and sulphonamide-aldehyde resin and' polyhydric alcohol-polybasic acid resins. Reference is also made to " woven and " needle felts. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 10246/38, as. open to inspection under Sect. 91.
