Abstract

664,100. Fabrics composed of agglutinated fibres. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. June 1, 1949 [May 17, 1949], No. 14711/49. Class 140. A fibrous product comprises pressed slivers or rovings containing potentially adhesive fibres and joined together by fibres protruding therefrom and extending into contact with contiguous slivers or rovings, the product being rendered coherent by autogenous fibre to fibre bonds. Two or more layers of slivers or rovings may be superimposed with the directions of the fibre lay in the different layers at an angle to one another ; in this case the slivers or rovings in the additional layers may be spaced apart, and a decorative effect may be secured by colouring certain of the slivers, rovings or webs differently from the rest. The surface of the product may be brushed, napped or embossed. The potentially adhesive fibres may be of cellulose esters, ethers or mixed esters, preferably plasticized, resins, either permanently thermoplastic or thermosetting, but in the thermoplastic state, formed by polymerization or condensation of organic compounds such as coumarone, indene or related hydrocarbons, vinyl compounds, styrene, or styrols, phenol-aldehyde resins either unmodified or modified with oils, urea-aldehyde resins, sulphonamide - aldehyde resins, polyhydric alcohol polybasic acid resins, drying oilmodified alkyd resins, resins formed from acrylic acid, its homologues and their derivatives, sulphur-olefine resins, resins formed from dicarboxylic acids and diamines (nylon type) ; synthetic rubbers and rubber substitutes ; copolymers or two or more monomers such as those of vinyl halide or cyanide and vinyl acetate or an after-chlorinated copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, or a copolymer of vinyl halide and an acrylic acid derivative ; mixtures of resins such as those of vinyl resins and acrylic or methacrylic acid resins, or of polyolefine resins and phenolaldehyde resins ; or fibres made from rubber latex, crepe rubber, guttapercha, balata or the like. Mixtures of cellulose derivatives with resins or rubber may be used. Plasticizers may be incorporated in the fibres before or after formation. The slivers or rovings may contain up to 90 per cent of non-adhesive fibres, such as wood pulp fibres, cotton, flax, jute, kapok, silk, or artificial filaments of cellulose or derivatives thereof, regenerated cellulose, natural or synthetic rubber or derivatives thereof, alginic acid, gelatine, casein, spun glass, asbestos, mineral wool, natural or synthetic resins not rendered tacky when the potentially adhesive fibres are rendered tacky by heating, and fibres made by slitting, cutting or shredding non-fibrous films. Activation may be accomplished by spraying with, or dipping in, a solvent, diluted with a liquid medium, or by heating by passage through the nip or a pair of heated rolls or between heated platens, or by dielectric heating, when the electrodes may be cooled so that activation only takes place in the inner portion of the web.
