Abstract

572,962. Paper &c. containing synthetic filaments; compound fabrics. SYLVANIA INDUSTRIAL CORPORATION. May 25, 1943. No. 8293. Convention date, May 25, 1942. Addition to 547,288. [Classes 96 and 140] Paper &c. is made from paper pulp containing non-thermoplastic fibres, eg., wood, rag, cotton, flax, jute, straw, glass, rock wool, asbestos, wool, leather, silk, or gelatine, casein, or glue filaments, and synthetic resin or rubber filaments, beaten together just enough to mix them together but not to hydrate the cellulose fibres, if present; the pulp being then felted and heated so that the thermoplastic filaments bind the fibres &c. together. The product, which may be absorbent or impermeable, and of high wet strength, may be a tissue paper, bank-note paper, wall -, laminated -, or electric insulating board, or board for use in shoes, and may be moulded, or may be used for uniting laminae of paper, cardboard, or wood. The resin filaments may be pre-formed. or sprayed by gun into or above the pulp. The resins which are preferably inert to acids, alkalies and dry-cleaning fluids, and non-water-swelling, may be coumarone, indene hydrocarbon, vinyl, styrene, styrol, aldehyde, furfural, or urea, &c. polymerization products, or urea-, phenol-, amine-, or sulphonamide-aldehyde condensates, polyhydric alcohol-polybasic acid, drying-oilmodified alkyds, acrylics sulphur-olefines, or nylon, or vinyl co-polymers, or resin and cellulose derivative mixtures; and rubbers used may be butadiene, olefine-polysulphides, isobutylene chloroprene, plasticized polyvinyl halides, or chlorinated rubber. The paper &c. may be heated by air, steam, or heated calender rolls, so that the filaments adhere at intersections &c. or are melted to form a continuous film or a glazed surface. Products with 10 to 50 per cent. of resin may be bent &c., and with over 50 per cent. machined with wood-working tools.
