Abstract

1327580 Non-woven fabric PRODUITS CHIMIQUES PECHINEY-SAINT-GOBAIN 19 Nov 1971 [20 Nov 1970] 53936/71 Heading D2B A non-woven fabric is made by (a) precipitating a thermoplastic resin on asbestos fibres in water in the presence of from 0.3-10% by wt., with respect to the thermoplastic resin, of a reaction product of a polyamide with epichlorohydrin, at a temperature of 40-100‹C; (b) forming an aqueous dispersion of the resulting coated fibres with other fibrous materials; and (c) forming a sheet from the aqueous dispersion by wet laying and drying the sheet. The thermoplastic resin may be a vinylic resin e.g. a copolymer of vinyl acetate with an olefin and/or unsaturated acid and/or unsaturated ester and/or unsaturated amide, a copolymer of vinyl chloride and/or vinylidene chloride with an unsaturated acid and/or unsaturated ester and/or unsaturated amide, a copolymer of styrene with an unsaturated acid and/or unsaturated ester and/or unsaturated amide and/or dienic compound, e.g. butadiene, and/or acrylonitrile. The resin/may contain plasticisers, and fillers e.g. kaolin, TiO 2 The latter may be incorporated separately from the resin. The other fibrous material may be wood pulp, casein, wool, asbestos, glass, or synthetic fibres e.g. regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, cellulose triacetate, polyamide, polyester, acrylic or modacrylic, polyolefin, a fibre derived from formal and polyvinyl alcohol, or a fibre made from a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride. A dispersion agent e.g. the sodium salt of a polycarboxylic acid may be used in step (a).
