[Class 100 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A hand printing device particularly for printing addresses on record sheets comprises a head 11 with a depending piston-like hand grip 12 to which is pivoted an operating lever 40 for moving a pivoted platen carrying member 20 to press the record sheet against an ink-ribbon covered printing plate mounted in the head 11. The printing plate A, Fig. 4, is inserted in a guide formed by inturned flanges 61, Figs. 6 and 7, of strips 60 secured to the sides of the head and to ensure correct insertion of the plate, it is formed with a notch a<SP>3</SP> to engage a pin 62 carried by the head. One of the strips 60 may have a portion bent inwardly to frictionally grip the edge of the plate to retain it in position. An ink ribbon 80 passing over the plate is wound on removable spools 81 carried in recesses 18 in the head, these recesses being normally closed by a cover plate 90 removably secured by a spring pin 91. The platen-carrying member 20 is pivoted to the head 11 at 30 and is normally locked against actuation, by a slidable latch plate 70 having a shoulder 75 engaging the edge of a plate 25 fixed to the member 20. When the printing plate is fully inserted into its guide, it engages the plate 70 and pushes it rearwardly against the action of a spring 74 to release the platen member 20 which may then be actuated by the lever 40 which is provided with a cam end 44 engaging a roller 50 on the member 20. The platen is in two-parts to permit either or both of two separate groups of lines a, a<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, e.g. two separate addresses, to be printed. The platen parts 104, 105 are carried by levers 100, 101, pivoted at 102 to the member 20 and held by springs 107 in contact with a control pin 110 having flattened portions 111, 112 opposite to the parts 104, 105 but spaced 180 degrees apart. In the position shown in Fig. 7, the part 105 only is operative but by turning the pin 110 through 180 degrees, the part 104 is rendered operative and the part 105 inoperative. If the pin is turned through only 90 degrees, printing takes place from both parts of the platen. Specification 547,028 is referred to.
