Abstract
648,263. Checking receipts. COLLECTION RECORDER CO. June 24, 1947, No. 16640. Convention date, Oct. 23, 1939. [Class 106 (i)] In a machine, e.g. for recording insurance payments, a card having printing indicia thereon is inserted in the casing of the machine so that a stop shoulder on the card engages a printing type carrier, the type is actuated to print on the card at a position determined by the stop shoulder, and impression mechanism is simultaneously actuated to print the card indicia on a record tape in the casing. The portable machine shown is used by insurance collectors and prints a receipt on a card retained by the policy holder and prints data from the card on to the record tape 18, Fig. 10, for use by the central office. Each card 56, Figs. 8 and 10, has a U-plate 58 bent around its forward end provided with numerals 59, representing, e.g., the office ledger number and the weekly payment. The card is positioned in the machine by pins 63 entering holes 62, and the stop shoulder 60 engages part of a severing device attached to the type carrier 32, this shoulder being progressively cut away on successive insertions of the card by a punch 65. As shown in Fig. 8, two shoulders are provided so that both sides of the card may be used. The printing and severing operations are performed simultaneously by closing the hinged cover 7 of the casing, which can be partially opened by the insurance collector and fully opened on release of a key-operated lock at the central office. Type carrier and severing device. The carrier 32, seen from below in Fig. 3, is slidable longitudinally in the cover 7 and comprises a middle portion carrying rotatable discs 42, e.g. to print the date or amount of payment, and transverse arms 34, 35. The discs are normally locked by a spring-pressed bar which is pulled away from the discs by a finger-piece 47. The cam 34 has a longitudinal slot below which is adjustably mounted a type plate 37 bearing the collector's name, and an inking ribbon (not shown) passes between rollers below plate 37 and discs 42. The carrier slides on a rod 52 and is pushed to the right, Fig. 3, by the inserted card against the action of a spring 55. The card engages a slot 72, Fig. 14, in a die 64 of the severing device. The punch 65 is secured to the arm 35 and connected to the die by a spring 78, Fig. 10, so that it is lifted with the cover 7 for the initial opening movement but the die remains in its seat to allow the shoulder 60 of the card to enter the slot to be subsequently cut away by the downward movement of the punch. Retained record tape. The tape 18, Fig. 10, and a carbon sheet 19 are mounted on rollers 17 in the base of the casing and pass over a printing pad 16. The tape is shifted, on opening the cover, by a rack-bar 24, Fig. 16, fixed thereto rotating one of the roller shafts through pawl-and-ratchet mechanism (not shown). When the cover is closed, a depending part, Fig. 10, presses on the plate 58 on the card to print on the tape. Also printed on the tape is a number corresponding to the line being printed on the card, these numbers being provided on a belt 79, Fig. 3, which moves with the type carrier. Cover lock. The opening movement of the cover 7 is limited by a pin 31, Fig. 16, on a keyoperated cylinder lock, normally engaging a slot 27 in the bar 24. When the key is turned, the pin enters a longer slot 26 to allow the cover to be fully opened.
