546,736. Electropolishing metal articles. DRUMMOND, F. E., and BENCH, D. E. May 15, 1941, No. 6273. Convention date, Dec. 20, 1940. [Class 41] Strip material in the form of a thin sheathing 11, Figs. 1, 2 of resistant metal such as stainless steel rolled or pressed on to a backing 10 is electropolished by anodic treatment in an indiarubber or glass lined cell 13. The strip, which may be for instance of such sectional form as shown in Fig. 2, is fed over roller anodes 20 disposed under an appropriately shaped cathode 22, supported by and insulated from the axles 25 of the anodes. The electrolyte may comprise a saturated solution of potassium dichromate in strong H2SO4 to which has been added from 5 to 25 per cent of a sulphonated high molecular weight alcohol such as lauryl, cetyl, or stearyl alcohol. After treatment the strip passes over rollers 32 in a rinsing compartment 14 and is then dried by hot air in compartment 15. The openings in the compartment walls through which the strip passes are fitted with indiarubber dams 18, 28, and 34. Figs. 5 and 6 show a modified arrangement of cell for polishing a pre-shaped strip 54, involving travelling anode and cathode members 60, 65, mounted on an insulating support 64.
