Abstract
856,230. Electrode materials and processing. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. May 2, 1958 [May 4, 1957 ; July 23, 1957], No. 14103/58. Class 39(1). [Also in Groups XXII and XXXVI] A method of making a thin reinforced diaphragm comprises pressing a thin metal blank to form stiffening projections or ribs 4 on at least one of the walls and to size the areas 1 of the sheet between the ribs and then subjecting the blank to a transformation treatment, such as an anodising treatment, extending through the blank from the plain face to the bases of the ribs. The blank is preferably of aluminium of 99À99% purity or an aluminium magnesium alloy. The ribs may be formed by a press or a rolling mill and may be as close as six per linear millimetre. The electrolyte for the anodic oxidising treatment is sulphuric acid, oxalic acid, chromic acid, phosphoric acid or mixtures thereof and the operation may be continued until the parts 1 reach the required degree of porosity. The diaphragm may be used for the separation of gases by molecular diffusion or as a target for storage tubes. In the latter case the smooth face is metallised at 5 and the grid may be lined with metal 6 to prevent subsequent oxidation.
