Abstract
545,640. Arrangement of wheels; rail-vehicle undercarriages. BRAITHWAITE & CO. (ENGINEERS), Ltd., CORNISH, H. W., and HEEL, J. A. VAN. Jan. 31, 1941, No. 1274. Addition to 537,342. [Classes 103 (vi) and 108 (ii)] [Also in Group XXX] The jib crane described in the parent Specification is provided with a support comprising at least three universally travelling mountings, such as balls 1, any selected one of which can be fixed as a pivot while the others are swung about it to reorient the crane. According to the present invention each crane bogie having a main running member or ball 1 is provided with a plurality of supplementary running members, such as wheels 28a disposed around the ball and spaced sufficiently apart to ensure stability of the bogie during movement. In the construction shown the wheels 28a are mounted on the ends of outriggers 28 which can be raised and lowered by screw jacks as described in the parent Specification. The raised position is shown at the left of Fig. 3 and the lowered position at the right. When it is desired to move the crane bodily in a given direction the bogies are first slued round in that direction and the wheels 28a are then lowered until they take the weight of the crane, which can then be moved on the' wheels as desired. If the wheels are castor wheels the crane may be moved in a curved path and the wheels could remain always in contact with the ground.
