Abstract
545,462. Polarizing apparatus. BAIRD, J. L. Oct. 23, 1940, No. 15601. [Class 97 (i)] [Also in Group XL] A transmitting or receiving apparatus for colour television comprises a Kerr cell 1 in association with a polarizing prism 2 on one side and a plurality of differently coloured light filters 3, 4 and polarizing prisms 5, 6 on the other side arranged to cover different portions of the Kerr cell, said polarizing prisms 5, 6 being polarized at different angles so that when voltages are applied to the Kerr cell to vary its polarizing angle, the light passing through the cell will pass through a corresponding colour filter and will be cut off from the other filter or filters. In a modification, separate Kerr cells are used for the separate filters. In a transmitter this apparatus is placed against the lenses of the transmitter and different voltages are applied to the Kerr cell or cells at each alternate picture to pass red and blue-green alternately. At a receiver, the apparatus is placed against a lens projecting on to a viewing screen the image formed on the screen of a cathode-ray tube 7. Specification 545,491, [Group XL], is referred to.
