545,231. Resorcinol-formaldehyde condensates. SOC. DES USINES CHIMIQUES RHONE-POULENC. March 3, 1941, No. 2846. Convention date, March 4, 1940. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group VIII] For affixing foils of plastic material, having a basis of cellulose acetate, to wood, a product of the condensation of resorcinol and formaldehyde is used as the adhesive. One part resorcinol is dissolved in two parts of a 30 per cent. solution of formaldehyde in water, the temperature is increased to 60‹C. and is maintained at this for 30 minutes. The semicondensate is then applied with a brush to the surfaces to be joined, and these are assembled and placed in a press with heated platens. The pressure should be increased slowly at first and then heat applied to bring about the polymerization of the semi-condensate, the adherence of the plastic material and wood being thus obtained. When the semi-condensate is not to be used immediately 10 per cent. of ethyl acetate may be added thereto.
