Abstract

Adhesives.-An adhesive, suitable for veneering wood and glass or for combining glass plates with plates of other materials is prepared by heating urea or thiourea or a mixture of both to fusion with a solid polymer of formaldehyde in the presence of an alkaline agent. After cooling and disintegrating, the product is placed in a thin layer between the surfaces to be united and the whole subjected to heat and pressure. The addition of an alkaline organic compound, such as formamide, to the starting material is advantageous. Examples are given of the condensation of (1) urea, thiourea and trioxymethylene in the presence of sodium acetate; formamide may be employed in addition to or in replacement of the sodium acetate; (2) urea and trioxymethylene in the presence of potassium acetate; (3) thiourea and trioxymethylene with the assistance of borax.
