Abstract

Elastic objects are manufactured by working up a polyvinyl alcohol, insoluble in cold water, in the cold condition into a paste with water and softening agents, the weight ratio of polyvinyl alcohol to water and softening agent being between 1 : 1 and 1 : 1.5, pressing the paste into the desired form and simultaneously or subsequently heating to 80--100 DEG C. There may also be added high molecular colloidal filling materials, e.g. glue, dextrin, gelatine or starch, which may be converted into the waterinsoluble state by the addition of tanning substances, e.g. formaldehyde, the weight ratio of polyvinyl alcohol and filling material to water and softening agents being between 1 : 1 and 1 : 1.5. The process is applicable to the manufacture of slabs with or without insertions of fabric, thin films, packings and articles of complicated shape, and to the production of tubes by means of a spiral press or a stamping press having a spraying aperture capable of being heated. In examples, compositions are employed consisting of polyvinyl alcohol and water together with: (1) ethylene glycol; (2) gelatine or glue, potassium dichromate and glycerol, if desired with the addition of mineral dyestuffs and fillers; (3) as in (2) with the addition of starch.
