Abstract

Celluloid-like masses are obtained by working up condensation products of polyvinyl alcohols and aldehydes, with softeners, fillers, high boiling solvents, colour, &c., as desired, in the manner customary in celluloid manufacture, viz. gelatinizing, kneading and hot pressing. In examples, 100 kgms. of polyvinyl alcohol formaldehyde condensation product are gelatinized with 60 litres of alcohol and 30 litres of benzol at 30 DEG C. The product is coloured on hot rolls and the major portion of solvent squeezed out. It is then heated in a press at 80 DEG C. and 20 kgms. per sq. cm. for 6 hours, cooled and cut into foils, (2) 90 kgms. of the same initial product are galatinized at 80 DEG C. with 10 kgms. p-toluene sulphonamide, 60 litres of alcohol and 30 litres of benzol and treated as in (1). Foils thus made are ductile and pliable down to -15 DEG C. Hollow articles such as dolls may be readily blown from the foils.
