Abstract

Elastic articles are prepared by pressing at a temperature of 135 to 180 DEG C. a mixture containing 25 to 85 per cent of a cold-water-insoluble polyvinyl alcohol, 15 to 50 per cent of softening agents (without water or containing no more water than the finished article can retain)-excess of polyvinyl alcohol over softening agent being used. Up to 50 per cent of filling materials may be used. The pressing operation may be performed by means of a worm press or piston press to yield continuous hoses, bands and threads, or by means of a stamping press to yield packings or diaphragms. Suitable compositions in the examples are (1) polyvinyl alcohol and glycerol; (2) polyvinyl alcohol, aqueous glue, ethylene glycol; (3) polyvinyl alcohol, starch, aqueous glue and glycerin; polyvinyl alcohol, starch, inorganic fillers and glycerin.
