Abstract

545,226. Two-stroke and four-stroke engines. POUNDER, C. C., and REBBECK, F. E. Jan. 9, 1941, No. 318. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A marine or stationary engine installation comprises one or more vertical internal-combustion engines drawing their air supply from a closed engine room in which a pressure above atmospheric is maintained by a fan, blower, or compressor. As shown, vertical two-stroke or four-stroke propelling engines A and auxiliary engines B for driving generators, compressors &c. are located in the closed engine room of a ship, in which air pressure is maintained by one or more fans F drawing air from outside through inlets E and pipes D. Admission to the engine room is through double doors with an intervening airlock. In a modification, the auxiliary engines are located in an enclosed section of the engine room, or in a separate engine room, in which air pressure is maintained. In this case, the propelling engines may be steam turbines &c. not requiring an enclosed engine room under pressure, or may be internal combustion engines in a closed engine room into which air under pressure is forced through a box discharging through louvres or shutters or through branched pipes with valves &c. so that a separate ventilating system for breathing purposes is not required. The application to a stationary engine installation is illustrated.
