Abstract

544,555. Vacuum cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. Oct. 16, 1940, No. 15313. Convention date, Oct. 19, 1939. [Class 8 (i)] The rear wheels of a suction cleaner are supported on a U-shaped bracket 11 pivoted on the casing and supporting the casing by springs 15 which may be of helical form with the coils of largest diameter at the middle. During propulsion the springs are compressed by the thrust on the handle 5 located over the rear wheels and the nozzle of the cleaner rises in proportion to the thrust. The form of the spring however allows an increased thrust on the handle, deliberately applied to move a lug 14a on one of the bracket arms out of a notch in a conduit 8 leading to the fan, and so to allow insertion of a converter hose connection into the conduit. Each spring may be replaced by a pair of springs of which one only acts during normal propulsion, while the other resists the extra thrust applied to free the converter conduit.
