Abstract

543,522. Electron oscillators. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Aug. 31, 1940, No. 13697. Convention date, Aug. 31, 1939. [Class 39 (i)] In a device employing a resonant cavity to produce standing waves which interact with an electron stream within the cavity, shields screen the stream from alternate half-waves. Fig. 1 shows an oscillator comprising a resonant cavity 3 through which an electron beam is projected from a cathode 5. Shields 15 screen the beam from alternate half-waves of the standing waves producing velocity modulation. The resulting oscillations are picked up by a loop 11 and fed back to a grid 7 controlling the stream. As the velocity of the stream decreases as it proceeds the lengths of the shields are correspondingly diminished. The application of the resonator to an amplifier and a demodulator is also described ; in the latter case the screens are of equal length. Fig. 4 shows a magnetron. The resonant cavity 31 is between the magnet poles N, S and the anode 35 surrounds the cathode 37 and is slotted so as to produce the screening action required.
