Abstract
537,918. Electron oscillators. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Nov. 30, 1939, No. 31193. Convention date, Nov. 30, 1938. [Class 39 (i)] In an ultra high frequency oscillator a cloud of electrons move within a resonant cavity 3, Fig. 1, to produce standing electromagnetic waves therein, a loop 25 within the cavity radiating energy. An accelerator anode 9 is mounted within a cathode which is in the form of a frame and a solenoid 15 surrounds the metal envelope ; electrons move towards the anode 9 but are diverted by the magnetic field to pass towards the cathode frame on the side opposite from which they issue. On approach to this side they are retarded and turned back starting oscillations within the cavity. The waves produced increase the amplitude of movement of electrons in phase with the wave causing movement outside of the cathode frame and flow to the metal envelope ; the out-of-phase electrons are slowed up giving up energy to the standing waves, until they fall on the anode 9. The end wall of the cavity is adjustable for tuning. In a modification the cathode 45, Fig. 2, is a circular disc and the accelerator anode 49 a circular grid ; the envelope 43 is biased negatively and the electrons produce circular standing waves. In a modification of this form the cathode 65, Fig. 4, is surrounded by a cylindrical accelerator 71 and a magnetic field causes side movement of the electrons ; in phase electrons are collected by the envelope. In a further construction electrons from the cathode 87, Fig. 5, are directed by electrodes 89 towards a retarding electrode 91 across the opening of a cavity 83 forming part of a sphere. A permanent magnet may be used in place of an electromagnet. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes an arrangement of centrally arranged cathode and envelope, wherein standing waves are generated without intervening grid. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
