Abstract

542,980. Canisters. STEEL & CO., Ltd., J., and SMITH. T. P. Aug. 13, 1940, No. 12920. [Class 18] Canisters &c. are made by passing paper strips over a coating roller which rotates in a bath containdng melted crude oil bitumen, winding the strip on itself while the bitumen is plastic to form a tubular body formed by super posed layers of paper with an inter vening layer of solidified adhering bitumen. The strip may be wound or a mandril which may be heated and each layer may be pressed by one o: more rollers. Ends consisting of meta or of layers of paper secured togethe by bitumen may be used. A covering sheet may be used on the outside. The end of the tube may be rolled to form a bead on which the end disc rests, or the latter may have a flange held between the bead and the body. The ends may also be formed as caps which fit in or on the end of the body.
