Abstract
541,686. Measuring voltage. ROBERTS, J. May 29, 1940, No. 9401. [Class 37] In an instrument for testing the condition of a battery by measuring its internal drop (the difference between its open-circuit e.m.f. and its terminal voltage when loaded up to, or above, its maximum discharge current); the voltmetercircuit is independent of the loading-resistance circuit so as to include the volt-drop at the contact between meter and battery terminals, but exclude that between the latter and the resistance connection. The meter 15 is connected between contacts 9, 10 insulated at 11, 12 from contacts 3, 4 between which the resistance 8 is connected. The contacts 9, 10 are shown as spring plungers, whereby, by depressing the handle 7, both sets of contacts may engage the battery-terminals. Alternatively, both sets of contacts may be fixed and the instrument itself manipulated for obtaining the two readings. The resistance may be variable, or of fixed value but removable from its contacts 3, 4 or interchangeable as by contacts 3, 4 being removably mounted on carrier members, Fig. 2 (not shown).
