Abstract
543,660. Detecting faults. CONRADI, E. S., and GALE, R. A. Nov. 5, 1940, No. 16127. [Class 37] In apparatus for testing the earthing connections of portable devices, an incandescent lamp or other indicator, such as a voltmeter, is connected in parallel with a source of current supply of which the voltage falls appreciably under a heavy load. A portable cabinet 10 has a non- reversible plug and socket 12 for connection to a mains supply, and a test lead 16 connected to a clip 18 is led through the back wall of the cabinet. The front sloping wall carries a pushbutton switch 20, an incandescent lamp 22, an ammeter 24, and a socket 26 for receiving a three-pin plug of a soldering iron or other device to be tested. Within the cabinet is a loosely coupled step-down transformer 32, Fig. 2, having its primary winding 34 connected to a contactor 38 connected to the terminals 40, 41 of the socket 12 and operated by means of the switch 20. The lamp 22 is connected in parallel with the secondary winding 36 of the transformer 32 and has one terminal 44 connected to the test lead 16 and the other terminal 46 connected through the ammeter 24 to the socket 28 for receiving the earthing pin. The clip 18 is connected to the bit or other conducting part of the device to be tested, If the earthing connection is in order a heavy current is indicated on the ammeter 24 and the secondary voltage of the transformer falls so low that the lamp 22 does not light. If the earthing connection is broken or has a fault such as several broken strands the lamp 22 lights and indicates the fault. The connection between the ammeter 24 and the lamp 22 may be earthed.
