Abstract

254,852. Lumsden, J. May 25, 1925. Charge indicators; cells with small auxiliary electrodes.-To facilitate testing the charge condition of an accumulator by taking voltmeter or ammeter readings while a current of from 10 to 120 times the normally allowable discharge rate is taken from it, a comparatively small cell, preferably composed of a pair of plates not exceeding one square inch in area, is placed in the electro. lyte in conjunction with the main plates and arranged so that the test may be applied to it and not to the main plates, thereby keeping the comparatively high current for the test within practicable limits. The small plates may be placed outside the area of the main plates, or may be recessed as shown at 4, 5 into one pair of main plates 2, 3. A switch 6, 7, 8 enables the small plates to be connected either to the main plates for normal use, or to the meter 9 for testing. Modifications are described wherein one small plate only is used and co-operates with a corresponding area of a main plate of opposite polarity. The dial of the voltmeter may be graduated so as to indicate the charge condition directly.
