Abstract
541,310. Electrically operated internal expanding brakes. STOTHERT & PITT, Ltd., and COOMBES, R. J. May 20, 1940, No. 8969. [Class 103 (i)] An electromagnetically-released spring-applied brake comprises in one form shoes 3, 4 pivoted respectively at 51 5<SP>2</SP> applied to a drum by springs 12 and each provided with a spigot 7, 8 wound with a coil 9, 10 which when energised cause the shoes to approach each other to release the brake. The faces of the pole pieces 71, 8<SP>1</SP> are inclined and the air gap between them can be adjusted by moving the polepiece 71 transversely relatively to the spigot 7, which is slotted for this purpose and receives tightening screws 7<SP>2</SP>. In another form, the shoes are mounted on a common pivot at one end and a cam is disposed between the other ends by which the shoes may. be applied mannually against the electromagnetic action. Manual means may also be provided for releasing the shoes.
