540,737. Pressure-relieving devices. HEASELDEN, H. April 26, 1940, No. 7507. [Class 135] An hydraulic system, particularly a domestic hot water system, is fitted with a frangible diaphragm pressure relieving device so arranged on a branch conduit that the diaphragm is normally isolated from the liquid in the system by air trapped in the branch conduit between the diaphragm and the liquid. In the form shown in Fig. 2 the diaphragm 25 of thin lead sheet or stout foil is clamped between the flanged ends 221, 231 of two pipes 22, 23, by a coupling nut 24. In a modification the two pipe sections screw directly into one another and the surface of the flanges have annular grooves to ensure a liquidtight joint. In another form the flanges are recessed to receive the edge of the diaphragm and are secured together by bolts. A spike or knife-edge may be fitted at 32 to facilitate rupture of the diaphragm when it bulges under excessive pressure.
