540,686. Differential gearing. FREDERICKSON, C. E. April 20, 1940, No. 7168. [Class 80 (ii)] In a differential gear in which worms 11 gear with planet gears 20 and with gears 14, 15, secured to the ends of a pair of driven shafts. the worms 11 and their bearing blocks 13 are removable and replaceable as a unit. As shown, the casing is in two parts 1, 2, being divided in a plane containing the axis 2-2 of the spider 18. The latter has a bore 26 journalled on the gears 14, 15. Recesses 9 are formed in the casing parts 1, 2, to permit the worms 11 and their bearings 13 to be assembled. The outer surface of the bearings may be part-spherical or rectangular.and the journals 12 on the worms 11 may rotate in the bearings 13. Alternatively the worms may rotate on pins the ends of which are secured in the bearings 13.
