Abstract

539,866. Liquid-pressure engines. RICE, J. H., and RIMER MANUFACTURING CO.; Ltd. April 2, 1940, No. 5949. [Class 69 (ii)] A hydraulic apparatus for operating mechanism requiring a reciprocating movement such as the underfeed stoker mechanism described in Specification520,078, [Group XXX], is constructed with power pistons 14, 15 fitted with racks 18, 19 geared together by a gear 20. the power being transmitted directly by the racks or indirectly from the shaft of gear 20. The supply of the operating oil, which is delivered by a constant delivery pump to an inlet 1, is controlled by a pilot slide valve 3 which is actuated by liquid admitted to either aperture 12, or 13 under control of piston valves 5, 7 moving in cylinders 4, 6. The pistons 5, 7 are in Fig: 1 connected directly to the power pistons 14, 15, and in Fig. 4 they are operated by racks 26, 27 from the shaft of the gear 20. The pistons 14, 15 may be of different diameters. The valve 3 may be retained in its end positions by a spring-urged pin which engages recesses in the valve. A relief valve 24 is fitted in the inlet 1, and an adjustable needle valve may control the rate of admission of the oil to the cylinders 16, 17. The pistons 14, 15 operate alternately, and when one is connected to power the other is connected to exhaust. The valve control described is similar to that described in Specification 520,123.
