Abstract
539,704. Composite mica plates ; electric insulation. BOUGHTON, W. A., and MANSFIELD, W. R. Jan. 19, 1940, No. 1184. Drawings to Specification. [Class 70] [Also in Group XXXVI] Composite high temperature-resisting mica plates &c. of high electrical resistance are made by assembling mica film on a screen, and spraying or painting with binder, to half the necessary thickness, uniting two such half-plates with oversize films outermost so that the surfaces of the plate may be kept free from binder ; a series of such plates are then stacked with two thin metal separator plates between each, some thicker plates being used to prevent warping &c., superficially dehydrated, e.g. at 40‹ C. and with partial vacuum, heated to 550-650‹ C. in a furnace and whilst still red hot, and with the binder in a molten vitreous state, compressed at 250-500 lbs. per square inch and cooled under compression. As binder may be used 1 part by weight of monosodium phosphate, 4 to 6 of borax and 14 to 20 of water, about 4 per cent. of binder being left in the finished plates. The separator plates have a low coefficient of thermal expansion and may be of a nickel-iron alloy.
