825,900. Making electric condensers; welding by pressure. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 2, 1957 [Oct. 15, 1956], No. 30826/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] In joining an aluminium terminal member to an aluminium capacitor foil member having a thickness less than 0.001 inch a brittle good dielectric oxide layer is formed over the natural oxide layer on at least one of the members, the members are juxtaposed with the brittle layer between them and the members are subjected to pressure to disrupt the layers and effect a cold pressure weld. The foil preferably has a thickness between 0.0008 and 0.00017 inch. An aluminium terminal 22 having natural oxide layers 32, 34 and having an electrolytically deposited film 24 of high density brittle aluminium oxide is cold pressure welded to a capacitor foil 20 having natural oxide layers 30, 31 by pressing against the foil a tool 40 with square projections 44 thereon so that each projection exerts a pressure of about 50 pounds per square inch, a flat tool 42 being held against the terminal. The oxide films are disrupted from local areas and these areas are welded together, pockets between the areas being filled with particles of the oxide layers. The electrolytically deposited oxide layer may be formed on the foil only or on both foil and terminal and may be formed by anodic oxidation using sodium borate and boric or phosphoric acid, potassium borate and phosphoric acid or ammonium borate and boric or phosphoric acid as the electrolyte.
