Abstract
538,599. Splints. HAYNES, H. H. Feb. 3, 1940, No. 2164. [Class 81 (ii)] Apparatus for holding the broken ends of fractured bones in position comprises a pair of yokes 3, 4, (Fig. 1), two pairs of pins 1, 2 of stainless steel or the like secured to the yokes by means of two pairs of plates 6, 8, set screws 13 and pivoted clamping members 14, and a pair of adjustable holding bars 5. The pins 1, 2 having been placed in position in the bones are secured by plates 6, 8 by means of nuts 11, the ends 7, 9 of the plates being rounded transversely to allow for the different inclination of the pins 1, 2. Set screws 13 and clamping members 14 are then tightened. Holding bars 5 comprise two aligned rods 22, 23 (Fig. 10) having an internally threaded sleeve 25 and gripping element 26 which permit the adjustment of their total length, and end portions formed by sockets 20 (Fig. 3) and parallel plates 33. Sliding bar 36, with a toggle mechanism permits the rapid fixation of ball members 21 on the yokes 3, 4, within the sockets 20. A tool to facilitate the fitting of the apparatus to the broken limb is described.
