Abstract

567,715. Treating fractures ; splints. ANDERSON, R. May 18, 1943, No. 7884. [Class 81 (ii)] Fracture-treating means of the character including transfixion pins, half-pins or wires, for holding the fractured fragments during reduction and healing, comprises one or more rods 10 and clamps 18, adapted for rotation and sliding adjustment along the rods 10, each clamp having means for holding a transfixion pin &c. and for securing it to a rod 10, the tightening of the holding means rendering the transfixion pin &c. and the rod rigid, whereas the loosening of the holding means renders them relatively adjustable. For holding the portions of a fractured femur during the healing process, half-pins 31 are positioned in non- parallel relationship in each portion of the bone, each respective pair of half-pins being clamped at 18 to rods 10, the rods 10 being connected by another rod 10 through clamps 12. The portions of a fractured tibia are held by pins 30, clamped at 18 to rods 10 and wires 32 held taut in yokes 33 furnished with pins 34, Fig. 9, clamped at 18 to rods 10, the two units being connected by further rods 10 clamped at 12. Turn-buckles may be provided in the connecting rods 10 to enable tension to be applied to the portions of the bone. Other combinations of half-pins, pins and wires are described for the treatment of intertrochanteral and femoral fractures. Each clamping unit 12, Fig. 5, comprises U-shaped members bored at 13 to slide on the rods 10, a bolt 15, pinned at 15x, passing through each clamping member to tighten them upon the rods 10 in their adjusted position. Each clamp 18, Fig. 8, comprises a U-shaped member, bored at 19 to slide on the rods 10, tightened by a bolt 21, headed at 22 and transversely bored at 26 to receive pins 34, 30 or half-pins 31. A nut device for tightening wires 32 in their yokes 33, and a hand tool for pressing pins 30 or half-pins 31 through the bore in the fractured bone, are described.
