376,641. Fracture appliances. WASSENAAR, J. J. S., P.O. Box 37, Pilgrims Rest, Transvaal, South Africa. Dec. 22, 1931, No. 35487. Convention date, Sept. 22. [Class 81 (ii).] Apparatus for use in setting fractured bones, Fig. 1, comprises two jaw members 3 slidable in guide brackets 1, 2, which latter are connected by a screw member 5, by means of which the distance between the two is adjusted. A rod 6, preferably of square cross section, sliding in bosses 18 on the guide members ensures rigidity. Each jaw member is provided with a fixed jaw 4 with which a movable jaw 9, Figs. 6 and 7, co-operates. Said movable jaw is formed integral with a cylindrical projection slidable in a bore in the shank of the jaw member, and its movement is effected by means of screwed rod 12 provided with a ballshaped extremity engaging with a corresponding socket in the cylindrical projection. Set-screws (not shown in Fig. 1) are positioned in the guide brackets adapted to engage with parallel and circular grooves 14, 15 in the shanks of the jaw members, whereby the relative position of the jaw members is adjustable. Teeth on the fixed jaws are disposed at an angle to the axes of the shanks to avoid side slip. In operation, the jaws grip the broken ends of the bone, screw 5 is rotated to bring the bone ends clear of one another and one of the jaw members is then moved in its guide bracket until the ends of the bone are brought into alignment for plating or jointing.
