Abstract

437,130. Surgical fracture appliances. ANDERSON, R., 1319, Medical Dental Building, Seattle, Washington, U.S.A. May 18, 1934, No. 15093. Convention date, Oct. 10, 1933. [Class 81 (ii)] A splint for reducing limb fractures comprises a pair of traction devices which are provided with means for transfixing a limb, and means are provided also for relative rotation and angular adjustment of the traction devices in order to bring the fractured bones into position for setting. The apparatus comprises a base frame made up of parallel rods 3 joined rigidly to transverse end members 1, 2, and a crossbar 4 which slides on the rods 3 and is moved along them by means of a leading-screw 40. Curved brackets 5, 6, are secured to the member 2 and the crossbar 4, respectively, and these brackets carry at their upper ends bearing-members 7 in which U-shaped yokes 10 are mounted. The members 7 can be rotated about an horizontal axis relatively to the yokes and secured in any position of adjustment by bolts 15. The yokes 10 slide between flanges 17 on the members 7, and are clamped in position by bolts. Each yoke is provided at its ends with slots 25 for seating and clamping a cross rod 26, a traction pin 27, or the stem of a U-shaped retaining-pad 28. The pin 27 is provided with a collar 30 to limit the extent to which it enters a limb. When used for reducing a fracture of the forearm, the pin 26 is passed through the upper end of the ulna, and the ends are clamped in the slots 25 in the yoke on the bracket 5. The traction pin 27 is inserted in the wrist, the wrist is then applied to the pad 28, and the pin is clamped in its slot in the yoke, as shown in Fig. 7. Traction can then be applied to the limb by separating the yokes by means of the screw 40, and the yokes can be turned relatively to one another to bring the fracture bones into proper position for setting. A cast or splint may be applied to the arm and allowed to set. A hand-supporting bracket may be attached to the bracket 6 if desired. In a modified construction, the bracket 6 extends to one side of the crossbar 4, and in another construction, the brackets 5, 6 are dispensed with, the bearing-members being secured to the crossbars 2, 4 and the yokes moving in vertical planes. Auxiliary traction pins may be attached to the movable yoke if desired.
