Abstract

538,422. Gun sights. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and WRIGHT, M. E. A. March 12, 1940, Nos. 4598 and 6451. [Class 92 (ii)] Gun sights for aircraft or other fast-moving vehicles are corrected for the speed of the vehicle when moving in a curved path, whilst diving, climbing or swerving, by centrifugal force acting on a weight which may control a bead or ring back or fore sight or an optical reflection or refraction member interposed in the line of sight. Fig. 1 shows the attacking aircraft a moving in a curved path p with a rear bead sight y deflected by a weighted lever d to give, in conjunction with a fixed foresight x, a corrected sight line c, s. Fig. 9 shows one form of weighted lever d carrying the bead y. The lever is supported in a ball joint 51 in a chamber 53 filled with damping fluid and is controlled for elevational and lateral correction by weights h, 63 respectively. Springs may be provided to control the movements of the weights. Fig. 14 shows a bead y connected to a piston 92 moving in a cylinder forming part of a U-tube containing liquid the extension of which in the legs of the tube forms the weight. The U-tube is movable laterally about trunnions 87 under the control of springs 91. Fig. 17 shows the application to a reflector sight of known type, the correction to the line of sight being obtained by the distortion of a cell 96 formed of glycerine between a fixed glass plate 98 and a similar plate 99 mounted for ,movement against the action of springs 110 under the centrifugal force of weights 102, 108. The cell is thus converted into a prism to deflect the line of sight. In place of the cell, a movable lens may be provided below the usual lens 95. Fig. 28 shows a modification in which the reflector 94 is controlled by a weighted lever 133. Fig. 33 shows a distortion cell 96 as in Fig. 17 with a weight 149 for use, as shown in Fig. 35, in conjunction with an unmodified reflector sight 94.
