Abstract
545,459. Aircraft gun mountings. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., and FRISE, L. G. Feb. 6, 1937, No. 3610. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A gun turret for aircraft comprises a hollow disc-like structure 16 tapered at its periphery and disposed edgewise to the direction of flight, the structure and the gun or guns carried thereby being rotatable about a transverse axis. In the form shown, the structure is rotated for training by a hydraulic jack 44 connected to one end of a cable 40 passing round a pulley 41 and anchored at its other end to a rubber loop spring 46. Two guns 11, 12 are mounted for elevation on a trunnion 15 and two further guns 10, 13 linked at 75 to the first pair move synchronously therewith about a trunion 14. Elevation of the guns in slots in the structure is effected by a hydraulic jack 31 through cable 32, pulley 35, and rubber loop spring 38. The gunner, accommodated in a fixed cabin 57 on a seat 25 automatically adjusted by the jack 31 to suit gun elevation, uses a sight 50 moved synchronously with the gun in elevation and training by cable gears, and controls the elevation and training by a handle 53 connected to valves 60, 61. The turret shown forms a rearward continuation of the tail plane 54 and is supported in bearings, trussed by a U-shaped member 23 in the gunner's cabin which is mounted above the tail plane and comprises opaque portions 55, 56 and a transparent portion 57. The guns are loaded through an opening 85 in the floor of the cabin which registers with an opening 87 in the turret.
