Abstract
385,580. Aircraft gun mountings; sights. GRANAT, E., 10, Rue Caumartin, and COMPAGNIE DES FORGES ET ACI•RIES DE LA MARINE ET D'HOM•- COURT, 12, Rue de la Rochefoucauld, both in Paris. March 23, 1931, No. 8880. Convention date, May 3, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii).] An aircraft mounting for twin machine guns 14 is supported on a rotary ring 2 carrying a transparent dome or turret 19 designed to balance the air resistance during training of the turret and elevation of the guns. The turret is symmetrical about the fore and aft vertical plane of the aircraft when the guns are directed in this plane, but is asymmetrical about this plane when the guns are pointed transversely. Air fins 21 are automatically operated through shaft 29 and gear 24 to balance the varying air resistance due to protrusion of the guns during elevation. The guns are elevated and trained from a common hand-lever 15 about axes c, d and a, b respectively and braking clutches 11, 10 as described in Specification 361,168 are provided for these movements, The two guns as a whole may be cross tilted about an axis e, f. The handle 15 which carries the firing trigger moves the gun in elevation through pinions 16, 17, 18. The turret is locked in training by means controlled by arms 20 against which the gunner leans to release the lock. The sighting mirror 34, Fig. 7, is automatically movable towards or away from the gunner by a cam slot 46 to keep the sight conveniently positioned in relation to the gunner on elevation or depression of the gun. For this purpose, the mirror 34 is carried by arms 36 rocked by a pinion 38 rotated by a circular rack 42 which is moved longitudinally by the cam slot through a link 44. Gearing 47, 48, 49 serves to keep the sight line parallel to the gun's axis during these movements and the circular rack permits the sight to tilt when the guns are moved about the axis e, f.
