[Classes 39 (iii) and 126] Solid fuel is ignited by an electric heater which may form or be located at the fuel-supporting surface of the grate. Fig. 1 shows a grate having its fuel-supporting surface formed by a sinuous steel tube c containing an electric resistance wire insulated by a good heat-conducting material such as powdered magnesium oxide. The ends of the tube are secured in a journal d which may be rotatably mounted in a frame a on which the tube normally rests. The tube may be used in the horizontal position to heat a cooking vessel or may be turned to a vertical position to heat the apartments. The heater may be removed from the chimney recess when being used for this purpose.
