536,906. Centrifugal separators. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 3, 1940, No. 139. Convention date, Jan. 5, 1939. [Class 23] Apparatus for separating gases from liquids, particularly hydrogen gas from lubricating oils, has a rotatable tubular element 11 and a stationary entry conduit 24 extending axially into one end of it; co-operating portions of the element 11 and conduit 14 allow a gas-tight liquid seal to be effected. The element 11 is driven by a motor through gearing 22, 23 and a sleeve 17. The conduit 24 has a flange 25 with a cylindrical part 26 and an inward rim 27; these parts form an annular chamber 32 which is entered by a disc 31 attached to and rotating with the end plate 27 of the tube or drum 11. A ring of holes 33 in the plate 27 permits the mixture from the conduit 24 to enter the drum. The liquid in the annular chamber 28 forms a seal between the inside of the separator and the atmosphere, while the liquid in the annular chamber 32 forms a gastight seal between the drum 11 and the conduit 24. The rotation of the liquid in the drum is assisted by wings 14 and the liquid is compressed at the periphery while the occluded gas is released and carried off through the outlet 45 by a vacuum pump. The liquid is discharged through an annular chamber 41 and openings 48 in the plate 40. This chamber forms a gas-tight liquid seal between the interior and exterior of the drum. Leakage of liquid is prevented by the annular chamber 53 which encloses a throwing disc 52.
